Establish Design session roles

Establishing a strong project team to execute the Design session is critical for success. Here is a breakdown of suggested roles for the session support team:

Role Description
Lead Facilitator This designated Design Leader for the overall innovation journey typically serves as the Lead Facilitator for the Design session. The person is accountable for the overall work effort, team management, client satisfaction, quality, on budget. Engages with Sponsors & Engagement Leader to ensure all accelerated design sessions are designed and executed to meet goals and deliverables. Lead facilitator during sessions. We strongly recommend certification in ExperienceInnovation™ as a prerequisite for all Lead Facilitators.
Breakout Facilitators Each Breakout Facilitator is assigned to work with one or more breakout teams during the session. Essentially serving as coaches, the Breakout Facilitators work hand-in-hand with Lead Facilitator and provide guidance and assistance to participants.
Process Facilitator Works hand-in-hand with Lead Facilitator to ensure all session logistics are completed to deliver session design. Supports Lead Facilitator to ensure session runs smoothly. Responsible for managing knowledge capture team during each session and overseeing creation of the post-session summary document for the client. Depending on the size of your team and complexity of the session design, the Process Facilitator can also take on the role of Knowledge Capture.
Knowledge Capture Works hand-in-hand with Process Facilitator to ensure all session key decisions, work efforts, output, and candid photos are captured digitally. Determine in advance with Lead Facilitator and Process Facilitator the client’s preferred medium and format for knowledge capture. Organize candid and session output photos in predetermined online Knowledge Capture Repository folder (i.e. Google Drive, DropBox, etc.).Coordinate with Process Facilitator on creation of session summary document.
Design Team Up to 50 invited session participants. Should be people representing a diverse cross-section from the organization who are willing to participate as the Design Team throughout each phase of the innovation journey process.

Planning the session

Once the project team and roles for the Design session have been clearly established, let the planning begin!

Session Details:

  • Participants? The designated Design Team identified by client Sponsors during the Charter phase of the innovation design journey. Ideally, the Design Team is approx. 50 people representing a diverse cross-section of the client’s organization and are the same people who participated in Inspire.  

  • Where? An environment large enough to accommodate a plenary area and team breakout areas.

  • How long? 2-5 Days (depending on size of Design Team and complexity of challenge statement).
