Design covers two key areas of the design thinking process; Opportunities and Ideate. In this phase, you will conduct a design session to create a prototype solution.

This Field Guide provides an overview and step-by-step guide for the Design phase of the business innovation journey, along with templates and samples of everything you need to get started:

+ WHAT IS DESIGN?

Rooted in design thinking methodology, Design is an accelerated, integrated approach for learning that actively engages the “whole” person through interactive exercises, creativity, collaboration, rapid iteration, music, images, color, time constraints, and other proven techniques to deeply embed knowledge.

Each fast-paced session is a highly structured 2-5 day event driven by a proven collaborative process for group learning and decision-making.

Sessions take place in specialized environments designed to inspire creativity and are supported by expert facilitation, multimedia tools, graphic recording, and a wide variety of innovative methods. Design teams capture, document and synthesize group work in real-time. Rapid-prototyping and acceleration techniques support concept testing and inspire higher levels of thinking.

+ WHY DESIGN

  • Focused time to explore and create
  • Time pressure creates energy and increases efficiency
  • Pushes through ambiguity
  • Forces quick collaboration
  • Minimizes grandstanding

GIVE IT A TRY:

The challenge is simple: In 18 minutes, build the tallest free-standing structure out of 20 sticks of spaghetti, 3ft of tape, 3ft of string and 1 marshmallow. The marshmallow must be on top.

+ THE BIG PICTURE

Iteration is a major theme throughout the Design process. Through the repetitive process of expanding and focusing, and then expanding and focusing again, breakthrough ideas emerge and concepts begin to evolve and mature along the way.

(BIG) How might we...?

+ WHAT HAPPENS IN DESIGN?

During the Design session, designers engage in activities to gain insight from their observations and brainstorm (or ideate) on the most critical opportunities for innovation. This session helps us narrow our design ideas, ensure they are connected to the “human centered” inspiration we gathered and pitch a couple of what we believe will be viable designs to take into testing.

1. Inspiration insights | Form insights from:

  • Knowledge Scan
  • Empathy building activities:
    • Personas
    • Field Trips
  • Vote for top insights

--

2. Opportunities | Frame opportunities:

  • How might we...
  • Define top 2 opportunities based on key insights

--

3. Ideate | Brainstorm big ideas:

  • Brainstorm top 2 opportunities
  • Use brainstorm jumpstarts to see new angles

--

4. Prototype | The Solution Design:

  • Storyboard top idea prototype
  • Refine prototype
  • Create prototype design brief

--

5. Pitch | Sponsor Briefing where teams present:

  • Prototype design brief
  • Test approach

--

SESSION GOALS

  • Design a solution prototype
  • Design a Test approach
  • Executive Summary and Video
